Diet Tips

Diet Tip #1 – Eat breakfast

There are plenty of studies on the net that indicate breakfast is the meal skipped most often. There is also plenty of research that eating breakfast is key to successful weight control. It is also important to eat regular meals throughout the day, fueling your body every 3 to 4 hours to keep your blood sugar on an even keel, prevent hunger-induced binging, and keep your energy up.

Diet Tip #2 – Eliminate foods that suck the life out of you

Avoid processed foods and fast foods that are only going to rob you of energy and replace them with real food such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, probiotic-rich dairy and healthy fats. Not only will you decrease the chemicals in your diet, you’ll also be increasing your consumption of essential nutrients for your health.

Diet Tip #3 – Don’t focus on the scale

Throw the scales away. Focusing on the scale is not a true representation of how you look. You can lose weight and still look flabby. Start an exercise program and see the difference.

Diet Tip #4 – Drink plenty of fluids

Adults need to drink at least 1.5L of fluid a day. Plain tap water is obviously a good source of liquid but a variety can be both pleasant and healthy. It’s okay to use sports drinks, juices, soft drinks, tea, coffee, milk etc.

Diet Tip #5 – Limit your portion size

Most people when confronted with a plate full of food will consume the lot. If you are served larger portions, you eat more and consume more kilojoules. Over a period of say 12 months, this will lead to a significant weight increase.

Diet Tip #6 – Clean the cupboards of fattening food

If you have a stash of crisps, chocolate or ice-cream in the house, you’re only making it harder on yourself. Get rid of it. Want an occasional treat? Make sure you have to leave home to get it… preferably by walking. You’ll probably enjoy it more anyway.

Diet Tip #7 – Don’t fall for the false claims

No matter what it says on the package, always read the ingredients and nutritional information. Terms such as… organic, all-natural, low-fat, paleo etc, are merely marketing terms designed to mislead… They tell you nothing about what is in the product.

Diet Tip #8 – Cut back on added sugar

Added sugar is the single worst ingredient in the modern diet and most people are eating way too much of it. If you want to lose weight, get rid of the added sugar. Just make sure you read labels, because even so-called health foods can be loaded with sugar.

Diet Tip #9 – Cut back on carbs at night

It’s a well-known fact that your body metabolises food more slowy at night when you’re not moving around as much, so you’re more likely to store fat. But this does not stop us getting the munchies. Stock up on fruit and have an orange ready when you get peckish in front of the telly.

Diet Tip #10 – Switch to brown

Whole grain versions of food such as bread, pasta and rice could shave inches off your waistline. A study from the U.S. claims that people who eat primarily white flour foods gain a half inch more around their middle each year than those on whole grains.
